Not many sequels surpass their modern sibling but this DVD does. Billy’s befriend, so is Pat Garrrett (although he is played by a different actor) and this is the showdown. This movie is the narrative of an extinct man claiming to be Billy who is after the pardon he was promised almost a lifetime ago. This movie picks up resplendent noteworthy a year after Young Guns left off with the surviving regulators being round up and situation for a hanging. Meanwhile Billy is being promised a pardon by the governor in return for testimony against his outmoded enemies who killed John Tunstall. Of course there is no pardon and Billy must rush and rescue his pals. Pat Garrett is of course paid a lot of money to turn on Billy, track him down and bring him to justice.

Out of the two Young Guns movies this is the more well known chronicle of the life of Billy the Kid. You don’t actually need to have seen the unusual to luxuriate in this movie but the modern is graceful advantageous too so you might as well.

The trailer for the movie is also included which is fair racy to behold how it was marketed in the USA. There’s also a featurette which is a sort of gradual the scenes, interview with the actors type thing. It’s beautiful involving. You can also objective study the credits if you want to listen to Jon Bon Jovi’s Blaze of Glory and Billy gain Your Guns songs.

Like Young Guns this movie has an obliging cast with Keifer Sutherland, Emilio Estevez, Christian Slater and Lou Diamond Phillips being the most famed ones. My only criticism is that they old William Petersen a different actor to play Pat Garrett than Patrick Wayne who played him in Young Guns. Once you regain frail to this it doesn’t matter. This is a sensational DVD you should catch it as well as Young Guns. If you esteem the movie reflect buying Blaze of Glory the solo album inspired by the film by Jon Bon Jovi as it’ll lift you benefit memory wise to the film each time you play it.

How many times have we seen a sequel that was better than current? Let’s face it: something like that is rare.

Young Guns, the film from 1988 was a succes at the box office, so a sequel came in 1990. Well folks, I’ll impart you: Young Guns II entertains and is even better than the new.

The legend of Young Guns II basically takes of where Portion I stopped.

Cast members Emilio Estevez, Kiefer Sutherland and Lou Diamond Phillips are united once more for some more fun in the wild wild west.

The anecdote may be historically unsuitable, the tale is nice and gives a lot of entertainment and surprises.

Emilio Estevez is serve as Billy the Kid and gives an even more satisfying performance than in the first one. He gives his crazy, triggerhappy character an extra touch and even shows a more emotional side of the character.

Kiefer Sutherland plays a marvelous role as Doc and even if his role may feel a bit smaller than in the first one, he shows that he’s there in every scene where he is vital.

Lou Diamond Phillips is cooler than ever as his Mexican Indian character, ‘Jose’ Chavez y Chavez. He steals the reveal with his serious, relaxed and knifethrowing protrayel of the character. Tall job.

As for the rest of the cast: there are a lot of newcomers in the film including Christian Slater, Alan Ruck, Balthazar Getty and William L. Petersen who all do a shapely job and retain the film, considering acting, in the safety zone.

The rest of the film: camerawork, locations, sets, costumes and music are all perfectly and professionally done. The locations are sparkling, stunning and display the West in it’s fat pride.

Now the Music by Alan Silvestri is what powers the film up. Sivestri once again shows he has the talent to bring the film to a higher entertainment value thanks to his music. It is tremendous adventerous western music with a nice Silvestri twist to it. Some moments can give you a sure chill along your backspine because of a titanic wide spot shot while a wonderfull theme is powering it up enormously.

Another element which makes Young Guns II better than the recent is that in the first portion some things felt a bit unexplored, too distinguished left alone. It gave you the feeling that it could have been worked out a bit more. Now with Young Guns II, those runt errors are gone. Some things peaceful feel like they could have been shown a bit better, but it doesn’t bother that noteworthy as in the first.

Also, another thing which makes Young Guns II incredible is the dramatic touch. The emotional level from the first film is raised a few bars in this one. Inquire Of a bit more drama and emotion, two elements which do this film a-ok.

The action in the film is absolutely large and well done. Shootouts, pursuits, one on one fights, horse stunts: it’s all allotment of the action. Western fans who care for spacious westernvoilence and action won’t be dissapointed: it has objective enough action and suspence to maintain you watching.

All in all, Young Guns II has become a highly intriguing original western which leaves you pleased in your seat. It rocks, it rolls and it beats the orginal Young Guns.

This is one of the most disappointing discs I have ever gotten. They advertise that it was shot at 4 times the high definition standard. I expected tall visuals with spacious detail and color. I also expected changing vistas of flowers. What I got was a stagnant mess. They seem to sit a hi-def camera in front of a scene and leave it there for 10 to 15 minutes. There choice of scenes is dreadful. They seem to have shot on a cloudy day, so there is not worthy color to the flowers. They also shot too far away from the flowers to gain worthy detail. The previous reviewer is legal the first scene is out of focus. Several other scenes have focus problems. For most of the scenes it would have not been worthy of a change to fair have one level-headed represent. This is a major turkey of a disc. The only redeeming allotment of the disc is its sound track. There is a choice of three. Two are novel agey type of music that sounds decent and one of nature sounds.

The best of this HD Moods series is by far, “Moutains” (glance my review) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream HD Moods Flowers! Click Here

“Flowers” composition is not the worst but not the best either. It is shot almost exclusively looking straight on. Which doesn’t sound awful, until they don’t focus the camera on the distance where you peek natually looks, example: the first shot is thru a pink rose garden arbour and the vista in the distance is totally out of focus and hurts your eyes, yet the side roses are in certain focus. Weird. I mediate they tried to give the illusion of it being far away but fail.

In addition to being shot straight ahead, the camera is often too terminate to the scene, giving you the feeling that you are peering over a hedge with your nose touching it. Not the most comfortable visual. The first three shots are irksome; there are three worth-while shots of an asian garden: one far away, but the composition again is off; next a dazzling one of a deer-scarer (the water fills up, bangs, then refills..this one (you don’t hear the bang, thankfully) is fine; there is another really lovely shot of a stepping stone water garden (my common) . There are some objective useless shots of white lilly-pad flowers that are so end up they appear to be on ‘pause’ because nothing is entertaining for so long - it actually frustrates you waiting for it to go, it appears frozen; there is another obscene stop up shot of a rose and it’s buds that seems to have been taken impartial to indicate off the value of your 65 creep plasma detail.. not relaxing to me, far too stop, it’s annoying, but maybe to others this is attractive.

Buy,Download, Or Stream HD Moods Flowers! Click Here

I doubt i will ever play this bluray again. There doesn’t appear to be any menu at all, and none to loop scenes you like repeatedly which would have added mountainous value to this bluray, as the annoying (to me) scenes form it not worth my time to sit and ff thru (there are no chapters to skip thru, you must ff thru the whole bluray) .

End result is frustrating visually, a chaoticly-themed, imo. I would say this dvd is more stressful than relaxing. Aside from the three shots mentioned, I wouldn’t ever want to study this dvd again, and i wont because they are at the destroy and i can’t be bothered to ff thru the whole thing to glimpse 10 minutes of film.

On the plus side, it is radiant.

Just another teenage graduation night film? Or something much better?

“I Love You, Beth Cooper” was a film that debuted back in the Summer of 2009 and is based on a 2007 novel by writer Larry Doyle (”The Simpsons”, “Beavis and Butthead”). With a screenplay adaptation from the novel by Doyle, the film would be directed by Chris Columbus (”Mrs. Doubtfire”, the first two “Home Alone” and “Harry Potter” films), music composed by Christophe Beck (”The Pink Panther 2″, “We Are Marshall”, “Elektra”) and cinematography by Phil Abraham (”Mad Men”, “The Sopranos”).

Larry Doyle has mentioned that his inspiration for the story was films like “Sixteen Candles” and “The Breakfast Club” and his take on graduation night and the adventures of five teenagers.

The film revolves around Denis Cooverman (played by Paul Rust, “Semi-Pro”, “Inglourious Basterds”), a valedictorian at his high school who is planning to go to college at Stanford University. A smart student, he has his life going for him. But if there was one thing that he regrets, it’s the fact that he has always had a crush on Beth Cooper.

He hangs out with his best friend Rich Munsch (played by Jack Carpenter, “The Return of Jezebel James”, “The Journal”) who gives him a pep talk that because it’s graduation day, if he has things to get off his chest, let it out with no regrets. Tell Beth Cooper how he feels and for Denis, this stays in his head but instead of telling her face-to-face, he figured why not tell her on graduation day during his valedictorian speech.

As he gives his speech and talks about living life with no regrets, in front of everyone at the graduation, he tells the popular cheerleader Beth Cooper (played by Hayden Panettiere, “Heroes”, “Shanghai Kiss”, “Malcolm in the Middle”) that he loves her and how he has always loved her. But somehow along the way, his speech starts to go downhill as he takes a swipe on fellow students such as his his best friend, Rich (who he tries to give a hint that its time to come out of the closet), a swipe at the school bully that has tormented him throughout their school years, a hint to the girls who has an eating disorder, a swipe that men shouldn’t be dating high school students (a dig at Beth Cooper’s boyfriend Kevin, who is played by Shawn Roberts) and a dig on a popular but yet shallow student. Of course, no names are being said but high school students start to judge who may be the person Denis is referring to and thus changes the jovial graduation to a graduation full of discomfort and confusion. Needless to say, students who think Denis was talking about them, give him the stare of death after the graduation day.

Denis doesn’t realize the severity of what he has done but for Beth Cooper, she was very much appreciative of what he had to say, although her military boyfriend Kevin is not and really wants to beat Denis up.

Fortunately, this causes problems between Beth and Kevin and sure enough, Denis is able to get her to possibly come to party he is hosting at his house.

Since Denis and Rich are not exactly popular students and very much are nerds, his parents (played by Alan Ruck and Cynthia Stevenson) leave the house for some R&R and hope their son has a great party. Of course, during a man-to-man talk with Denis and his father, his father tells him and Rich that if needed, there are condoms in the drawer of his bedroom. Of course, Denis is happy his dad is giving his blessing to get lucky tonight while Rich wonders if the condoms are meant to be used on each other (furthering Denis’s feelings that his friend is gay).

So, while the two wonder if anyone is going to come to their party, Beth Cooper and her two popular cheerleading friends Cammy Alcott (played by Lauren London, “90210) and the bubbly yet not-so-smart Treece (played by Lauren Storm, “Flight 29 Down”, “The Game Plan”) come to the party. With no one else coming, both Denis and Rich try to entertain the ladies but meanwhile, Beth tries to make her ex-boyfriend Kevin jealous by telling him that she’s spending her time with Denis.

Next thing you know, Beth’s ex-boyfriend Kevin and two of his military friends go to Denis’s home and so livid that his girlfriend is spending time at Denis’s house, they start trashing the place, while Kevin’s mission is to literally beat up on him.

Denis tries to fight and defend himself and of course, it leads to nothing and thus both he and Rich end up escaping the house through the window and falling to the ground. After sustaining some injuries, the two manage to join Beth Cooper and friends on an adventurous graduation night which leads them to bare Beth’s bad driving, buying beer at a convenience store, going to a farm to tip cows, going to a graduation night party where a lot of the high school kids are at and avoiding destruction on the roadway while trying to have a good graduation night and for the most part, to be out of the way of Kevin and his friends.

But through the night, Denis who feels that he knows everything about Beth Cooper starts to see a side of her that he has never seen before. A good side but also a bad side.

Will Denis survive the night and will Beth Cooper get to know the real him?

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“I Love You, Beth Cooper” is presented in 1080p High Definition (AVC@33MBPS). For the most part, picture quality is pretty good as the film is featured in the sunlight. But the film pretty much takes place during the night. During the day, colors are vibrant, during the evening the blacks are nice and deep and I saw no visual artifacts or banding.

For the most part, the film looks very good. But to tell you the truth, I didn’t notice too many details that stood out. The truth is that there are not exactly a lot of memorable scenes as most of the action takes place inside Denis’s home or inside Beth’s car. Seeing the scabs or blood all over Denis’s face is something I wasn’t really trying to look for detail but if there was one scene that stood out, it was a breathtaking scene overlooking the lake and mountains near the end of the film. Picture quality is good for the film on HD.

As for the audio, audio is presented in English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio (also in Spanish, Portuguese and French 5.1 Dolby Digital). The film is primarily a dialogue and music driven film and are front and center channel driven. There are some scenes that utilize the surrounds such as crowds heard or the various crashing of cars or during the more action-based scenes. Probably one scene where you get the most action is when Beth Cooper literally crashes to a home where party is being held. But for the most part, the film is literally more about the dialogue and the music and the lossless audio definitely showcases the modern music of this film.

Subtitles are featured in English SDH, Spanish, Portuguese and Cantonese.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

“I Love You, Beth Cooper” comes with the following special features:

* I Love You, Larry Doyle - (5:52) Novel/screenwriter Larry Doyle talks about the book and the film adaptation and how films like “Sixteen Candles” and “The Breakfast Club” inspired him.

JUDGMENT CALL:

“I Love You, Beth Cooper” was like a mashup of my favorite teen/young adult films that I have enjoyed in the past and present. A little bit of “Sixteen Candles”, “The Breakfast Club”, “Say Anything”, “American Pie”, “Superbad”, “Go”, “Nick and Norah’s Playlist” to name a few. With each of those films, there is a sort of redemption with the characters or some type of happy ending. I suppose you can say that with this film, “I Love You, Beth Cooper”, it’s more like a one night stand that really doesn’t go anywhere after that. I couldn’t help but feel that perhaps there were major differences between the novel and the film version.

As for the main characters, it’s not that they are unlikeable but Denis and Rich are your stereotypical nerds and with this storyline, you sort of think that this film would predictable in that the nerd gets the hot girl at the end or meets some success, whether redemption against the bully or possibly even getting a new girlfriend.

If anything, for most teen films or similar style of films, the main nerd characters always gets the better end of the deal at the end of the film but in this case, I felt that redemption was given to the Denis’s best friend Rich (who is just a supporting character) and he gets to have all the fun at the end and somehow, that just didn’t seem right to me. Somehow the main character, Denis Cooverman gets lots in the shuffle and by watching this film, you can’t help but feel sorry for him. He literally becomes the human punching bag and you wish for that “3:00 High” moment of redemption of where he would defend himself. It’s important to note that there is an alternate ending included on the Blu-ray via the special features where Denis does get that redemption but unfortunately, the final cut chose not to go that direction.

“I Love You, Beth Cooper” is not a bad film nor is it a spectacular teen film. But I’ll admit, I did enjoy it. I enjoyed the nightly adventures by the five characters (granted, it helps if you had a wild experience during your graduation night) and the crazy adventures they endured throughout the day and night. There are some comedic moments courtesy of the character of Rich and Treece.

And fortunately there are some shining moments with Paul Rust as the main character of Denis. If anything, he is a good hearted guy. Nerdy..but a good-hearted guy who is not all that good with talking to girls. Rust captures that feel of the character and that awkward nerdiness. Hayden Panettiere is very good at playing the popular cheerleader who likes to have fun and party but also likes to have some danger in her life (sounds similar to her “Heroes” counterpart but really, it’s not). And it was great to see Alan Ruck as Denis’s father in the film, 23-years later after taking part in his own successful, teen adventure film as the best friend in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”.

But it’s that one scene that was changed in the film from the novel (the convenience store scene) between Denis and Beth Cooper that was so important but in order to not get the R rating and keep it at PG-13, I felt would have really made sense to the audience of why Rust’s character starts to see things differently with Beth Cooper. In my opinion, that was one scene critical to the novel that brings a turning point to the storyline. So, it’s unfortunate that version of that one scene was not used.

Overall, “I Love You, Beth Cooper” is an entertaining teenage graduation night film but nowhere near being classic.

At the end of the day, you can see how Chris Columbus and even Larry Doyle tried to bring that John Hughes style to the film. But Hughes was a master in character development and knew how to take those characters to the craziest and more touching moments of the film. We see the adventure, we just don’t feel captivated by the characters. Again, the film has its share of fun moments but it’s the final payoff that you expect from these type of films is what is lacking from “I Love You, Beth Cooper”. In the end, “I Love You, Beth Cooper” is a fun popcorn flick but nothing more than that.

I sat through this whole film just for the sake of making sure this Blu was all I was really seeing and hearing - and it blows me away that Fox made such a great product on a subpar movie like this. The Blu clarity was outstanding throughout; night sequences, colors, saturation, action, landscapes - all of it. The DTS was great; the music was mixed perfect as to still hear the simultaneous dialogues perfectly and the outer channels get used quite a bit. The supplements are extensive and include:

(HI-DEF)

* 7 minute alternate ending. It branches off from the dock scene near the end of the theatrical cut and takes a way different slant with the three muscle heads imposing on their lake location with weird results. You do not see any of the parent-in-the-yard ending.

* 7:36 minutes of deleted scenes with a play all option. Forgettable, glad they were cut.

* 5:54 minutes of Love U Larry Doyle. The inspiration behind the story and interviews with the author.

* 8:54 minute We’re All Different plug. Essentially the casting reasons, how everyone liked their parts, blah, blah, blah.

* 2:48 minute Peanut Butter Toast. A home video clip of Rust singing about making toast in his kitchen - painful.

(LO-DEF)

* 3:02 minute Fox interview with Paul Rust. An ad plug for the film with an interview.

* 3:02 minute Fox interview with Hayden. Same thing.

The only thing I got out of this was all the movie trivia his sidekick kept spewing, liked it. Otherwise this whole corny story of the nerd getting the hot chick through a million unlikely events, road trips and bad acting didn’t work for me. I am sure this will appeal to the teen fans of Hayden and some of the other eye candy followers (Shawn Roberts, etc.) But, I have to rate this higher overall because the Blu provides plenty of reference points for a film of this genre; both sound and pic clarity (especially those lake/mountain panorama scenes). The supplements may be contrived but they are thorough - so 2 for the film, 1.5 for the Blu and .5 for the supps. Enjoy.

Burl Ives plays Ephraim Cabot a greedy miser of a man who has managed to estrange his sons Peter (Pernell Roberts), Simeon (Frank Overton) but most especially Eben (Anthony Perkins) who wears bitterness like an oversized suit. When Ephraim brings home a current, young step-mother for the boys and wife, Anna (Sophia Loren) causes rivalries to commence anew between the brothers, their father but most especially Anna. It seems Ephraim has made the decision to leave the farm Anna when he dies. Eben confronts Anna but their confrontation erupts into passion as the two sleep together.

Eugene O’Neill occupies the same location in American Literature as a playwright as, say, Sophocles did for the Greeks. While Sophocles told of grand and daring characters who tumble from grace with the gods, O’Neill focuses on anyone from the average American to the celebrity (I negate in our screwed up world that’s what passes for a “valiant” figure now) . O’Neill’s best plays (”The Iceman Cometh” and “Long Day’s Swagger into Night”) tend to focus on the everyman and his or her struggles with temptation and how they ogle their redemption. While “Desire Under the Elms” isn’t O’Neill’s best work, it unexcited resonates with a number of difficult and forbidden themes. It’s O’Neill’s version of “Oedipus” but with characters that for all their daring qualities, are flawed and simple human beings.

That said this is a so-so film adaptation of O’Neill’s play. The fault lies in making the film a “star” vehicle more than anything else. The script compromises the integrity of O’Neill’s recent play and the direction, although imaginative at times unbiased doesn’t bring the drama to life. Mann’s opens up the play a bit but some of the sequences quiet have a static quality to them. The performances range from decent to so over-the-top that they add a campy quality to the film and bring out the soap opera elements of O’Neill’s location. This is definitely an O’Neill play that deserves a reinterpretation despite the fact that it’s a fairly minor work in his canon.

Shot in Vistavision one of the earliest widescreen processes, the shaded and white images would probably have been a bit sharper and with better clarity if there was some sort of chunky scale restoration done on the film. As it is, “Desire” looks decent although some of the sequences watch a bit muddy while other parts perceive a bit washed out. There’s also quite a bit of analog blemishes. Given the age of the film, the unlit and white images explore fine decent. It’s unlikely that Paramount gave the producer responsible for this film-to-DVD transfer the budget for the indispensable restoration of this film. The sound is aesthetic decent although the frequency response isn’t as superb as it could be. Tranquil, Elmer Bernstein’s striking regain comes across with helpful presence and the dialogue is fairly determined.

There are no extras included. There is no commentary track.

Although not a complete distress, this adaptation of O’Neill’s play leaves a lot to be desired. Basically a star vehicle for Sophia Loren and Anthony Perkins, the splendid short-tempered cinematography and director Delbert Mann’s imaginative direction can’t overcome a script that takes a allotment meal come to O’Neill’s play.

The tape quality is apt and the fact that’s it’s in sunless and white enhances the somber tones of the sage and stark disagreement of the characters. The highlight of the film is a stunning (however brief) performance by a pre-Bonanza Pernell Roberts whose portrayal of a keen brother lifts some of the oppression that runs throughtout this narrative. I’ve watched this film more than once for it’s cinematic beauty and the quality of acting…but this is not a like record, rather a anecdote about worship at it’s darkest. If I were a fan of Eugene O’Neill I probably would have given this 5 stars.

I’m a grand fan of Woody Allen (even his “clunkers”), but this is my absolute popular Woody film. All of his films are personal, but none as personal and revealing as this…and ABSOLUTELY spellbinding. Seth Green, Woody’s young character, is perfect, justifying his recent success. Fabulous performances from Woody’s usual stock troupe (Kavner, Wiest, etc) are all in tune with the goings-on. Mia Farrow, in particular, is a hoot, especially her scenes with Danny Aiello. Woody even managed to squeeze a cameo from Diane Keaton at the raze (”You Be So Nice to Near Home To”) . Comely and sweet. It’s too abominable the Academy eliminated the category for “Best Adapted Win”, cuz this woud’ve won, no query. The greatest songs of the period (1940-1945) were lovingly presented, and anyone who sees this film can’t aid but be left with a wistful, soft and nostalgic feeling. Yes, this is my common Woody film.

One of Woody Allen’s most underrated outings, “Radio Days” is a tremendously laughable film which depicts the grip that radio had on America during World War II. While void of an exact location, “Radio Days” succeeds as a series of vignettes bewitching a loud, droll Unique York family whose lives are enlightened by an array of music, sporting events and soap operas which approach their home by method of static-filled airwaves. Long before TV and the Internet, radio was the only source of celebrated culture in many American homes. Family members who fought constantly (And boy do they fight in “Radio Days”!), always found time to bond around the enormous radio cabinet in the kitchen or living room. In typical Allen fashion, the dialogue and characters are delightfully over the top. The cast — Michael Tucker, Julie Kavener, Seth Green, Mia Farrow — are stellar and perfectly trustworthy for the tainted script. The proper charm of the film is Allen’s witty assume on War-era radio shows. Everything from Superheroes to a radio ventriloquist (consider about it…) are spoofed in intention that only Woody can spoof. Of course, classic songs from the 1940’s gloriously re-reate the romance and charm of a bygone era. While “Radio Days” may not be as “valuable” as “Annie Hall” or “Manhattan”, it is a wonderfully captivating film which bares all the trademarks of a Woody Allen classic.

I would drop into the group of folks who began watching “Sunny” with the inception of the Dumpster Baby episode and, in turn, quick got himself caught up with the first two seasons on DVD. Aside from the heaps of praise that “Sunny” has gotten since it first appeared, it’s inclusion on the FX Network made it especially curious as (in my plan) they house the best unique television on basic cable today.

While the first 2 seasons are narrate perfect in their believe correct, Season 3 delivers the funniest moments to date of this already unbelievable reveal. Anyone who is a fan already knows which moments these are (ie; Day Man) . My personal current is the season finale, specifically the Mac vs. Dennis dance off, which is quite possibly the funniest moment in TV history.

Season 3 also includes the gang trying out for the Eagles, the death in Dennis and Dee’s immediate family, battling a local Korean restaurant, Mac joining the mafia and a few drop-ins from the McPoyle family. What makes these scenarios so original is that they are relatively serious at a stare but are filtered through some of most ridiculous and hilarious circumstances that even the largest hot button instruct becomes comedy gold, leaving no one and nothing spared.

With one week until Season 4 begins anew, the public at grand has the opportunity to gain all caught up or give themselves a refresher of hilarity. I’ll be enjoying multiple viewings.

Mac, Charlie, Dennis, and Dee are support with daddy Frank to wreak their special kind of havoc and no one is reliable from their foul shenanigans. For those who have not yet had the pleasure to score this fabulous note, pick equal parts “Arrested Development” and “Seinfeld” and add in a dinky “South Park” and you have “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” which is truly one of the funniest shows ever aired on television.

The 1960’s-style theme music makes it seem like you are about to examine an innocuous point to, only to be bombarded with one of the most over the top, hysterical comedies where nothing is sacred and no one is above their particular style of scorn. Whether it is trying to capitalize on a baby they found in the dumpster by putting her in commercials (then of course putting shoe polish on her to create her more “ethnic”), determining if Dee’s latest squeeze is learning impaired, getting sold into prostitution by their dad, scheming for an inheritance, cheating at being the final conclude on a pub bound tour, performing in a rock band despite not luminous how to play an instrument, sleeping on the streets because their apartment is too elephantine of stuff from the dump, or trying out for an invincible situation on the Philadelphia Eagles, they always give it their special impress of incompetence and it always blows up in their faces.

Though many plots are straight out of other sit-coms, the Philly gang manages to “produce them their maintain,” bringing a novel deliver to the mostly cookie-cutter offerings that currently air on television. The envelope pushing humor and adult situations are not your standard fare; thankfully FX has the guts to hold it on the air (unlike Fox, which would have canceled it after 4 episodes like they did “Kitchen Confidential”) . The DVD extras are not that plentiful - bloopers, commentary, a featurette on the note, a featurette on the McPoyles, and the hysterical “Dancing Guy” who shows up in “Frank Sets Dee on Fire” episode.

It’s a shame this cost 15 dollars. Its running-length is less than an hour, and there really are no special features to accomplish up for it, other than a scrutinize at the premiere, which, of course, is about as thrilling as it sounds. What the creators really should have done was added the “cavalcade” in as an extra, then went befriend and made something that’s actually trustworthy, and worth spending 15-20 bucks on, for the feature. Rent, don’t take this one.

I’ve been a fan of Seth for years and I looked forward to this disk to be released. But now that I’ve watched it I feel cheated. It would be more apt to title this, “Seth MacFarlane’s Cavalcade of Bits not Laughable Enough to be on the Least-Funny Episodes of Family Guy.” I got a few *slight* grins out of it (very puny) but mostly I found myself thinking how I had unbiased wasted $15. If you really feel you *have* to notice this, either rent it or peer for it in the dollar bin around mid-summer. Or maybe even next month. What a rip.

The idea of “Stranger Than Fiction” appealed to me the moment I first heard of it. Harold Crick, played by Will Ferrell, wakes up one day and hears a voice. An omniscient narrator is relating his life with precision and no one can hear that voice but himself. It turns out that the voice is Emma Thompson, playing a famed author who is actually writing a novel about a character named Harold Crick. And it’s the same Harold Crick. What is being put down in fiction is also concurrently happening in real life. It’s a tricky concept, one that I felt might be impossible to pull off effectively. Well, not only does “Stranger Than Fiction” pull it off–it succeeds grandly as a surprisingly thoughtful, amusing, and moving contemplation of life. For Harold must immediately confront his mortality when the narrator informs him/us that he will soon die!

The complicated narrative of the film is pulled off brilliantly. The overlapping structure necessary to maintain the momentum and cohesion of the film must be attributed to a clever, intricate screenplay. Literate, witty, and real–it’s a real treat. Lots of interesting effects help to pull the two worlds together making even the most mundane moments of Harold’s life visually compelling. The movie’s construction is fascinating and enjoyable.

Will Ferrell reins in his typical “overgrown kid” persona, and plays Harold as a real guy. It’s refreshing and while I’ve never considered him a leading man type–his tentative romance with Maggie Gyllenhaal (while a bit of a stretch) is played very credibly and sweetly. Dustin Hoffman, as a literature professor helping Harold discover what book he’s in, is having a great time. But it’s Emma Thompson that stole my heart. As the author, she is a complete neurotic mess–but as she begins to realize what is happening, something in her transforms. Her character provides much of the film’s insight and it’s most powerfully dramatic acting. It’s a deft balancing act, and as usual–she hit all the right marks.

After a near perfect movie, we have to bring both stories of Harold to an end. The movie turns into a poignant examination of sacrifice. If Thompson kills Harold in her novel, it will be recognized as a great piece of literature. If she lets him live, the novel will be just another routine bit of entertainment. This art versus commercialism angle is absolutely enthralling, and also surprising since it is raised so late in the film. There are moments of real power as everyone faces important life decisions–but these aren’t false “lessons,” they are genuine emotion that the film has subtly earned.

Ultimately, the ending is exactly what the film wants it to be. While I didn’t find it the most satisfying choice–it is perfect for the movie because by this point the film itself is mirroring the novel within the film. It’s a clever bit of trickery and very unusual. I admired “Stranger Than Fiction” very much and would give it 4 1/2 stars as an original and intelligent treat. KGHarris, 11/06.

A disclaimer: I’ve got a high tolerance for quirky and this film certainly qualifies as such. I loved it, but I love quirky films a lot more than the mainstream moviegoer.

I went to see this movie on a whim and so I didn’t quite know what I was getting into. But a few minutes into it I just KNEW that it was going to be one of my favorites. And, indeed, it is one of the best films I’ve seen in the theater in a while. I smiled throughout the whole of it.

The story is new. The characters are engaging. And the plot is so very random that it just works.

Now I’m one of those people who ALWAYS questions the logistics of say *time travel* and/or *magic doorways* but this film was so very charming that I wasn’t bothered by how incredibly non-sensical it seems: an author *creates* Will Ferrell’s character and can decide if he lives or dies with her *typewriter*?

Oy.

The fact of the matter is, it’s a fairy tale of sorts for a new and modern society. It’s filmed in such an aesthetically astute manner. The actors are at their very best and most endearing. And the writing is wholly engaging.

It’s NOT your typical Will Ferrell movie and if you go into it expecting fart jokes and prat falls, you’ll be disappointed. But if you go into it with an open mind and a receptive heart, I imagine you’ll be quite touched by the ideas it’s trying to negotiate in its sweet and clumsy way.

The first time I had seen this film was the summer of 1978. I was 7 years ragged, really into the music of The Beatles and had to stare this movie. This film was not a tribute to The Beatles, nor did the true members of the group have anything to do with the movie. It was a fantasy film about the fictitious characters that The Beatles weak in their songs off the “Sgt. Pepper” and “Abbey Road” albums.

The yarn takes dwelling in the make-believe town of Heartland where we are introduced to the recent Sgt. Pepper and his Lonely Hearts Club Band. Twenty years after Sgt. Pepper dies, his grandson Billy Shears (Peter Frampton) decides to fabricate a novel Lonely Hearts Club Band with his friends, the Henderson Brothers (The Bee Gees) . The film continues with the success of the Lonely Hearts Club Band, the problems the citizens are having in Heartland with Mean Mr. Mustard (Frankie Howard) taking over the town and the Lonely Hearts Club Band helping Strawberry Fields (Sandy Farina) recover Sgt. Pepper’s instruments that Mean Mr. Mustard stole. They encounter many obstacles and hardships, but in the kill, imperfect is overcome and everyone is jubilant.

This film was not well received when it was released in 1978. Actually, everyone, including the critics and the public, hated the movie. The film was produced by Robert Stigwood (of ‘Grease’ and ‘Saturday Night Fever’ fame) and executive produced by Dee Anthony. Stigwood wanted to design his name associated with new day musicals and had sunk 12 million dollars into “Sgt. Pepper.” He approached the project with a lot of enthusiasm and publicity. When it was released, it was a gargantuan let down in the eyes of the critics and adults (who were teenagers when the unique “Sgt. Pepper” was released) who went to survey the movie. According to Paul Nelson of ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine (October 5, 1978) “…Stigwood and Anthony not only produced one of the worst movies ever made, but also managed to trash whatever rock and roll reputations such seventies artists as Peter Frampton and The Bee Gees…” Two reasons for the disfavor of the film is the fact that no one spoke during the duration of the film (except for the narration done by the gradual George Burns who played Mr. Kite) and dilapidated Beatle songs were redone by common seventies artists. The hurry of the film in some cities was “…so short…that those who were lucky enough to blink may have missed it,” according to ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine (October 5, 1978) . I have never read a review on this movie from a critic who actually liked it. Only myself, my friends and my parents seemed to like this movie.

While watching this movie and reading so many awful reviews about it, I smooth liked it and opinion it was done creatively. Musicals usually have dialogue with the songs to support proceed the area along. In this musical, the only spoken words are the behind George Burns’ narration of the storyline. The Beatles’ songs and the set are intertwined and that’s what tells and moves the sage along. The songs communicate to the audience whether a character was ample (”Strawberry Fields Forever”) or awful (”Mean Mr. Mustard”), it emphasizes what is happening in the scene (”She’s Leaving Home”), how a person feels for another one (”I Want You, She’s So Heavy”) . The songs also explain feelings of cheerfulness (”Safe Morning, Superior Morning”) and sadness (”Golden Slumbers” and “Carry That Weight”) . What a design of putting a movie together by telling a memoir through musical dialogue! I don’t agree with the statement made by ‘Rolling Stone’ magazine that “…Sgt. Pepper is better on vinyl than it was on film.” I opinion that for remaking some of the Beatles’ classic songs, these artists did a worthy job. Some that I collect particularly top-notch are Aerosmith’s “Arrive Together” and Earth, Wind and Fire’s “Got To Procure You Into My Life.” The finale tops off the film with the entire cast and many other superstars such as Tina Turner, Bonnie Raitt, and Robert Palmer singing the reprise of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.”

I saw this movie for the first time on television when i was very young - maybe 10? I’ve always remembered the movie - and I am the only person I know who did. Even my mother, who bought the album for me blueprint befriend when, didn’t remember it. That is, until my obsession with proving its existence brought me to buying both the VHS and CD. This movie is pure camp. I thought it as a spoof on other musicals, melodrama, and the overabundance of “reliable versus tainted” provided by the contemporary Star Wars (the battle between Billy Shears and Maxwell Edison is simply fine) . As a bonus, the Bee Gees, Peter Frampton, Sandy Farina, and Frankie Howerd all do renditions of classic Beatles’ tunes which are to be judged separately from the originals. No one will ever scream “Lucy” like the Beatles - but in the context of the movie, Diane Sternberg does an exceptional job that is independent of the classic. Aerosmith’s “Reach Together” actually can enjoy its believe with the novel. Personally, I mediate the movie is worth watching simply for George Burns’ softshoe version of “Fixin’ a Hole” - well, that and seeing Peter Frampton in that oh-so-sexy silver disco suit. It’s time to “Gather Abet” to movies that are fair expressionless fun, and Sgt. Pepper is a gargantuan starting point.

This is a superlative period share and a gleaming adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell’s 1865 modern of the same name. This BBC mini-series is a grand costume drama with stellar performances by the entire cast. Area in rural England, the film centers around Molly Gibson, the seventeen year old-fashioned daughter of a country doctor. Richly drawn portraits of Molly’s neighbors and friends quick emerge and weave an gripping tapestry of nineteenth century life.

Molly and her father, a widower for most of Molly’s life, have an exceptionally discontinuance and loving relationship. Their relationship is do to the test when he decides to marry a widow and ragged governess, Hyacinth, who is a pretentious, self absorbed, ridiculous woman. She has a grown daughter named Cynthia, a exquisite young woman, end to Molly in age, but as different from Molly as night and day. Cynthia is best described as a Marilyn Monroe of the Victorian age. Cynthia and Molly become snappy friends, while Molly barely tolerates her nigh intolerable step-mother.

The series really revolves around Molly’s relationships with all the characters in the production and her handling of the various everyday situations in which she finds herself. Richly drawn, memorable characters, as well as intrigues, secrets, and romance, form this a highly keen drama and one that those who esteem period pieces and lush, well acted costume dramas will relish. It is simply a masterpiece.

With stunningly crisp visuals and splendid clarity of sound, the production value of this three disc, five hour DVD is simply first rate. It is also value laden with some very challenging features. There is an enchanting fifty five shrimp portrait of Elizabeth Gaskell, the author of the current upon which this mini-series is based. There is a also a twenty tiny documentary on the making of the film which is racy, as it gives a bird’s peruse belief of the plan that went into the making of the film and the development of the characters. There is also a who’s who guide to the performers. This DVD is well worth having in one’s collection.

“Wives and Daughters” is adapted from the unfinished Victorian current of Mrs. Elizabeth Gaskell and is produced by the same creative geniuses that gave us A&E/BBC’s 1995 “Pride and Prejudice.”

This tale centers around girl-next-door Molly Gibson (Justine Waddell of “Mansfield Park,” “Tess” and “Mammoth Expectations”) and her father, the town doctor (Bill Patterson) . Their idyllic lives are turned upside down when Mr. Gibson remarries the selfish, self-absorbed Claire Fitzpatrick (Francesca Annis) and her comely daughter Cynthia (Keeley Hawes of “Our Mutual Friend”) join the household. The brothers Osborne (Tom Hollander) and Roger (resplendent newcomer Anthony Howell who reminds me of a young Mel Gibson) Hamley add romantic interest to the memoir. However, the Hamleys arrive from veteran English stock and the squire Hamley (stale actor Michael Gambon) desires his sons to marry into “wealthy used English families.” Before long, Molly falls for Roger and Roger falls for Cynthia and we, the viewers, glean some surprising discoveries along the procedure!!

Memorable supporting characters include the goodhearted Browning sisters, town gossip Mrs. Goodenough, mysterious Mr. Preston (Iain Glen) and the aristocratic Cumnor family. Justine Waddell is shining as Molly and Michael Gambon and Francesca Annis turn in memorable performances. The scenery, costumes and production values are all proper. Screenwriter Andrew Davies - who also penned P&P - gives us a satisfying, romantic recent ending that would form Mrs. Gaskell proud. I loved every moment of this adaptation! If you are an Anglophile, bask in a expansive admire anecdote or are a fan of Mrs. Gaskell, this is the film for you!!!
